309 Validation Errors

The site in question needs not be named specifically but is an example of the way some developers manipulate the buzzwords of XHTML, DTDs and validation to clients. This site sported a DTD for XHTML 1.0 Strict but had a whopping 309 validation errors including very basic stuff that actually surprised me. Also this site used document.write extensively which also doesn’t validate as XHTML 1.0 Strict. Basically these developers hadn’t even known what the spec was and must have just put in the DTD and said ‘Here you go its XHTML 1.0 Strict’. The entire navigation is unusable, even non-existent, without JavaScript enabled as well.

That this isn’t a totally uncommon story is worrying, too. We need an industry with some integrity where if someone isn’t a standards compliant developer they don’t claim to be one.
